Your support enables innovative research and practice in the expanding fields of documentary and nonfiction media which empowers students, faculty and community members at SF State University.

As we emerge from the COVID pandemic, we face new challenges in keeping programs like the Documentary Film Institute thriving. It is imperative that SF State and its uniquely diverse community continue to be at the forefront of reality based media practices and innovations.

A gift to DocFilm goes a long way to support:

DocFilm FELLOWS: Opportunities for long-term fellows to receive support as they gain valuable experience and mentorship participating in the various production and research activities of the Institute.

PLURALITIES CONFERENCE and JOURNAL: A peer reviewed, online, Nonfiction Film Journal publication with multi-media elements that brings together research and practice in documentary film and explicitly includes works from the intersecting disciplines of cinema, journalism, fine arts, anthropology, photography, humanities, science, public health, political and social science.

The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life: A groundbreaking collaboration between the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies and the Documentary Film Institute. This film and VR project brings together members of the Iranian diaspora from various backgrounds into one ensemble film that looks at how their lives have formed and transformed the SF Bay Area.

DocFilm Forum: Special guests are invited to take part in open dialogues surrounding nonfiction films and the issues they address. Forums include audience participation, are filmed before a live studio audience and published widely. (past guests include Barbara Hammer, Drew Dixon, Celine Shimizu, Ben Davis, Scott Christopherson, Brad Barber, Marc Smolowitz)
